SECTION G. WOMEN PHYSICIANS SECTION
There shall be a section within the MSSNY which shall be known as the Women Physicians Section (WPS). The purpose of the Women Physicians Section shall be to foster leadership, advocate for gender equity, promote women’s health, and supports the professional development of women physicians in New York State, in the Medical Society of the State of New York, and to represent the interests and concerns specific to women physicians in the State of New York.
Membership in the MSSNY Women Physicians Section shall be open to all MSSNY members who are paid members in good standing. Any paid MSSNY member may join the Section via a registration process. Only WPS members who identify as women are eligible to run for Governing Council and Officer positions. All members of WPS have the right to attend general meetings.
The Women Physicians Section shall hold regular business meetings of the council three time yearly at fall, spring and at the MSSNY House of Delegates Annual Meeting. These meetings may occur in person or virtually using teleconference formats to conduct such business as may be necessary.
The Women Physicians Section shall elect a Governing Council. The Chair of the Governing Council shall appoint the Chairs of the WPS Committees. The term of the Committee Chairs runs concurrently with the term of the Governing Council.
Standing Committees shall meet as needed and present a report of its activities at the Regular Business Meetings of the WPS. They shall present to the Governing Council a calendar of their meetings for the year by Feb 28 or 29. Members of the Committees shall be appointed by the Governing Council after a request for interest from members of the Women Physicians Section.
The Women Physicians Section appoints delegates to the MSSNY House of Delegates based on membership size, with representation on the MSSNY Council ensured by a Councilor. The Women Physicians Section is authorized to be represented in the House of Delegates by a minimum of one delegate, and, according to the rolls of the Medical Society of the State of New York, sixty days prior to the annual meeting, one additional delegate for each additional 400 members over 100, up to a maximum of three delegates. The method of electing the delegates representing the Women Physicians Section shall be determined by the Governing Council. Delegates representing the Women Physicians Section must be members of the Women Physicians Section.
The Women Physicians Section is authorized to be represented on the MSSNY Council by one Councilor with voice and vote. The Women Physicians Section Councilor shall be a member of the Women Physicians Section. The duties of the Women Physicians Section Councilor shall be as outlined in the MSSNY Bylaws, Article IV, Sections A and B.
